LEXINGTON, KY — Amanda Mays Bledsoe, city council member for Lexington’s 10th District, has announced her candidacy to represent Fayette County residents in Kentucky’s 12th Senate District. The announcement was made after Sen. Alice Forgy Kerr chose not to seek re-election.
Bledsoe has served on the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council for seven years. During this time, she has guided the council as Chair of the Budget, Finance and Economic Development Committee. While overseeing the $400 million dollar budget, Bledsoe initiated a workforce development grant program and led the creation of the Small Business Grant program, which supports small businesses during the pandemic. She has also had a hand in the recent infrastructure developments on Southland Drive.
“Lexington is the epicenter of central Kentucky,” said Bledsoe. “I understand the complexities at play and have demonstrated my ability to get things done for the community I love. My experience on the city council has taught me that strong solutions come about by listening to our community members and acting boldly on their behalf. I am ready to take our local voices to Frankfort and lend my experience in the Senate.”
Bledsoe is a fourth-generation Lexingtonian with an extensive background in public safety and community service. She has worked as a Senior Policy Analyst for the Council of State Governments’ national headquarters, joining forces with elected officials from all over the country on big challenges facing governments. Bledsoe’s work also involved collaborating with the private sector to help entrepreneurs create jobs and opportunity.
Bledsoe has tackled projects related to improving storm water drainage and wastewater treatment capacity in the Southland area. She has increased transportation infrastructure like the widening of Clays Mill Road, updating community parks and finishing the baseball complex at Cardinal Run. Bledsoe is dedicated to public engagement and is currently serving on the board of community organizations including The Salvation Army of the Bluegrass, Natalie’s Sisters, and the Kentucky Blood Center. She and her husband, Todd, have two children, Mays and Annabeth.
